Preserving Wichita's history has been a key aspect of downtown's renaissance.
To help guide preservation efforts, WDDC has conducted workshops for property owners on renovation tax credits and other financing options to preserve and find new uses for buildings that reflect Wichita's history. It provides renovation grants and assists property owners with grants and loans for facade improvements. It advocates frequently for the use of tax-increment financing districts to utilize property tax revenue for center city improvements.
Saving buildings or helping to find new uses for them isn't enough, however. Improved landscaping and streetscaping throughout the area provides a more useful and visually appealing downtown experience. And because any revitalization effort should keep an eye to the future, WDDC also became a foundation member of Visioneering Wichita, a regional organization dedicated to improving business, social and civic life in south-central Kansas for generations to come.
